For years, Ottawa’s answer to getting rapid transit farther into its suburbs has been Stage 3 LRT. There has been a promise that it would shorten commute times, reduce operating costs, and improve the ridership experience. But almost seven years after the first phase's opening, it’s yet to prove those results.
Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley is no longer convinced the city should wait for it to be a saving grace.
With thousands of federal workers spending more time in the office, students returning to school, and Ottawa’s roads preparing for the annual September surge, Hubley is calling for more immediate transit improvements in Kanata. Longer term, he says it may be time for the city to seriously consider bus rapid transit, or BRT, rather than waiting years for trains to arrive.
