Running for a job with no clear mandate: OCDSB candidates enter uncertain trustee race

Candidates are registering to run for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board this fall without knowing whether they will be allowed to govern if elected.

More than a year after Ontario’s education minister suspended the board of trustees and appointed a supervisor to oversee the OCDSB, the province has yet to say when — or under what circumstances — elected trustees in the Capital will regain their powers.

That has left candidates campaigning for a position whose responsibilities after the Oct. 26 municipal election remain unclear.

Chris Durrant, one of three candidates running in Zone 6, said that, if elected, his priority will be to urge the province to restore full governing powers to trustees.
