Sometimes, despite what you think are your best efforts, you’re simply a little late to the party. So it was with Wandee Thai which opened five years ago. Being oh, just a little enamoured with Thai cuisine, I was somewhat vexed by this oversight. And so I labour on, struggling to try everything on their menu.

I was told by one of the family members at Wandee that the name means “Nice Day.” Other searches reveal it as a female name and another definition suggests it means “High Caste.” However you choose to remember it, you’ll remember it first for some of the finest Thai take-away Ottawa has on offer. Take-out is all they do so they’re attuned to the special cooking considerations this type of service requires.

Wandee’s Pad Thai

Let’s get Pad Thai out of the way.

Traditionally it is meant to be made with tamarind, fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar but is often exclusively made using larger amounts of ketchup because, by some restaurateurs estimations, it’s a concession to the “North American palate” as I’ve heard it put. There’s so much wrong with that thinking, that it needs to be laid aside for another day.
