Hillcrest High School the scene of a double stabbing
Two teenage boys were stabbed and suffered serious but stable injuries.

It’s been a violent start to 2025 in Ottawa: On Mon, Jan. 13, Hillcrest High School in the city’s east end was put into lockdown after two teenage boys were stabbed and suffered serious but stable injuries.
Four youths were arrested, and two were charged. Their identities are protected because of their age. On Tuesday, Ottawa Police said in a press release that a 15-year-old male from Ottawa had been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public. A 16-year-old male from Ottawa has been charged with harassment by threatening conduct and mischief.
The two others arrested were released without charges, but police said the investigation is ongoing.
“I’m terrified, scared, and I feel really bad for the people who did get hurt and the people who are stuck inside,” said an unnamed grade nine female student to CTV.
Grocery store stabbing: A few days prior, on Saturday evening, Ottawa Police responded to a stabbing inside the Food Basics grocery store in Heron Gate. One adult male was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition. Another person was taken into custody. This was near the scene where a homicide occurred last year. Another stabbing occurred outside of the Food Basics in February 2019.
More details on last week’s Barrhaven homicide
On Jan. 7, 58-year-old Wilson Sabarros was found dead inside his Stonebridge home in Barrhaven. Ottawa Police have released few details, but it’s being marked as the Capital’s first homicide of 2025.
Nally Catala, who was Sabarros’ partner for seven years, told CBC that she let police into his home but was not allowed in herself. She didn’t know her former boyfriend had died until the paramedics arrived. The couple shared a young girl together and were good, supportive co-parents.
"Whoever did this left a two-year-old baby without a father,” Catala said to CBC. "It will be [hard] to explain to her in a few years what happened to him, to her father."
At this point police have not announced any suspects or arrests, and Catala said she has no clue what could have happened. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
